OPPIKOPPI 2010!

This year saw the 16th Annual Oppikoppi festival in Northam. It is the first time in the history of Oppikoppi that the festival sold out and the masses descended on the patch of earth that was set aside for camping.

I was lucky enough not to have had to camp in District 9 this year, and enjoyed 5* tent accommodation in the Kreefhotel. My stay at the Kreef Hotel was extremely pleasant. We enjoyed hot showers (to wash off the red dust haze), clean toilettes and breakfast every morning. I would recommend staying at the Kreef Hotel to anyone planning on going to Oppikoppi 2011 or other various festivals around the country like rocking the Daisies. www.kreefhotel.co.za

Some of my Favourite bands that I enjoyed in the Line –up include Southern Gypsey Queen, RHO, The Narrow, Billy Talent and Jack Parow and Vusi Mahlasela.

Radio Kalahari Orkes is headed up by front man Ian Roberts, and the music is Afrikaans Folk / roots music. Their sound is what truly mixed indigenous South African music should sound like, with a vibe of energetic fun and passion.

The Narrow had an awesome performance. This band is known for their energy and professionalism. Front man Hanu de Jong performs with vigorous energy and has amazing vocal ability. I enjoyed their show amongst the best in heavy rock and roll and was blown away by them yet again.

Jack Parow ( Zander Tyler) seems to have exploded out of nowhere and has taken the SA rap scene by storm as was apparent from the entertainment area, and the loud reception he received from the crowd. I must admit I really enjoyed his performance and had to keep myself in check as to not hop around on the rhythm.

Billy Talent was an all time hit at Oppikoppi . This band is from Canada and made waves across the globe with their hit track “Fallen leaves”. I was surprised at how many of their songs I knew. You can hear the influence from bands such as Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Red Hot Chili peppers and Pistols in their music. There seemed to be an exchange in energy, between the band and the crowd, and everyone was enjoying the vibe. A big thanks to Oppikoppi Productions for bringing this quality act to SA.

At about 1.30 am we headed up to the Top Bar , to end off our 3 days at Oppikoppi with the Purple Sneaker party (Australia’s longest running Indie party) and danced until 5.00 am that morning.

All in All one of the best Oppikoppi’s that I have had the pleasure to attend ,and this time instead of feeling that I can only barely manage to tolerate it for 3 Days, I felt it ended to soon. Maybe it is gracious hosting of the Kreef Hotel that made the difference . . .

Hi Hannie,
Stunning images (again). Kirsten would describe the Kreef Hotel as camping, princess style ;-). Looks like you had fun, maybe next year get a flu jab...

about

hannie du plessis, about,

I decided to become a photographer at the age of 16. I remember the moment clearly. I was standing amongst the crowd at the Tuks Rag show. Jack Hammer was on stage. Piet Botha shared a moment with the bass guitarist Tertius du Plessis, an in-house joke. I realized how many moments in life we miss, moments if not captured on film (at that stage) would be lost to us forever. At that precise moment my mind was made up...read more
